Putting the Spotlight on Generation O

When I first started thinking about who this magazine is for, all I could think about was the freedom, growth, and fulfilment that comes with following your dreams. Our society keeps telling you that you need to get a job, slick that hair back, and behave in an ‘acceptable’ manner, which most of the time means censoring your thoughts and actions, and allowing yourself to be pigeonholed by fear and what others think of you.

People who go after their dreams, survive the naysayers, and maintain a positive outlook, despite the odds, inspire me. They include the musicians who throw themselves into their art – even though people will say “boy you cyah make no money with dat”, or the entrepreneur who puts everything on the line to set up shop. Even before I myself stepped out of corporate life in late 2009, giving up my cushy executive office, and the steady pay cheque that comes with it, some people have encouraged me; some have looked at me like I’m crazy. Whatevs. Fact is, if you don’t ever take a chance and go after any of your dreams, you’ll die unhappy. Morbid and maybe even clichéd. But it’s a fact.

Many of the people you’ll see featured in Outlish are dreamers, and more importantly, doers. They don’t sit on their ideas; they mobilise them. I hope that their stories will inspire and motivate you to get out there, and do you. Get out there and do something you love and want to do.

Increasingly, I’ve been meeting people who aren’t afraid to buck the system, and try things on their own. Every generation has its geniuses and its pioneers. Every generation comprises people who remain locked in by fear and society’s expectations of them. Every generation has those people who say, ‘you know what, I going to try a ting’. Our generation is full of people trying to make it. They’re a bit more daring, adventurous and entrepreneurial. Outlish Magazine aims to feature these people and their stories, because they’re exciting and inspiring. From their stories, you can take away something that sparks ideas. We’re putting the spotlight on Generation O, and we’re uber happy that you’ve come along for the ride.
